Glossary of Terms found in Made Again Patterns

BASTE temporary stitching line meant to join two pieces together before final stitching is done. May or may not be removed later.

SCANT a very close distance, usually 1/16” - 1/8”

SEAM ALLOWANCE the distance between the raw edge of the fabric and your stitch lines, usually 5/8” unless denoted otherwise.

STITCH process of joining two piece of fabric together.

STITCH IN THE DITCH process of sewing between main fabric and bias binding so that thread disappears into seam.

STAY STITCH stabilizing stitch done in the seam allowance, usually on curves.

UNDERSTITCH the process of stitching seam allowances and facing together close to original seam lines so that facing rolls to inside of garment.
